Cool room repairs for Wembley shops and kitchens
Sam Celesti fixes walk-in cool rooms and freezer rooms for Wembley's grocers, butchers, bakeries, cafés, restaurants and caterers, about 5 km from the Perth CBD. He has worked in commercial refrigeration for over 20 years and is ARCtick licensed (AU55592). He does the work himself rather than handing it to a subcontractor, and the price is agreed in writing first.
Not every warm cool room has a refrigeration fault. In an established suburb like Wembley, the box the cold air lives in is often the weak link.
Cambridge Street, Herdsman and what they keep cold
Wembley's commercial life runs in two quite different directions:
- Cambridge Street: the suburb's main strip, with cafés, restaurants, specialty grocers and takeaways. Expect small walk-in cool rooms, upright drinks fridges and display cases for deli goods and cakes.
- Neighbourhood butchers and bakeries: freezer rooms and meat cool rooms that are opened all morning while orders are cut and packed.
- The Herdsman Business Park edge: offices, showrooms and the cafés and caterers that feed them, running prep fridges, underbench units and modest cool rooms for function food.
Butchers here call when a freezer room will not pull below minus 18°C after a delivery. Cafés usually notice the cake cabinet sweating or a cool room creeping past 5°C in the afternoon. Caterers worry most about a room that holds overnight but cannot recover fast enough once a big order is loaded. For the smaller cabinets, Sam's commercial fridge repairs cover display units and prep fridges.

If the room is warming right now
- Check the door closes by itself. Push it gently and watch whether it seals. If it springs back or leaves a gap, wedge it shut properly and tell Sam when you call.
- Make sure the power and controller are on. A tripped circuit or a blank display is worth checking before anything else. Do not reset breakers repeatedly if they keep tripping.
- Track the clock on your stock. Under the Food Standards Australia New Zealand 2 hour and 4 hour rule, potentially hazardous food should be held at 5°C or below. Under 2 hours above that it can be chilled again, between 2 and 4 hours it should be used immediately, and from 4 hours it has to be discarded.
When the box, not the machinery, is the fault
A cool room is an insulated box with a refrigeration system attached. Owners naturally blame the compressor when the room is warm, but in older strip shops the trouble is often in the structure. Many Wembley tenancies have changed hands a few times, and the cool room came with the lease or was bought second-hand. Twenty years of trolleys, deliveries and hosing take a toll.
The common problems are easy to miss:
- Door gaskets that have split, hardened or come away at the corners, letting warm air in all day.
- Sagging hinges and worn latches that stop the door closing on its own, so staff have to remember to push it.
- Failed door frame heaters on freezer rooms, which let the seal freeze to the frame and tear.
- Damaged panels and joints, where a forklift or trolley has punctured the skin and the insulation has soaked up moisture.
- Floors that have lost insulation, letting ice form underneath and lifting tiles or concrete in freezer rooms.
Each one adds heat load. The compressor runs longer, the evaporator ices faster and power bills climb, so the refrigeration system eventually fails as well. Sam checks the box and the plant together and quotes on what will actually fix it. If the room is beyond sensible repair, cool room installation may cost less over a few years than patching.
Booking Sam in Wembley
Ring for a free phone assessment of the symptoms. Sam will ask what the controller reads, how the door behaves and what the outdoor unit is doing, then tell you whether it needs a visit today. He is out in Wembley and neighbouring Osborne Park regularly, and provides cool room repair services throughout Perth. A yearly maintenance check is the easiest way to catch a tired seal before it costs you stock.
