Ice machine repair for Perth venues, any major brand

A bar with no ice stops selling cocktails. A seafood counter with no flake ice cannot display fish. When your ice maker quits, it costs money from the first hour, and bagged ice from the servo is a poor stopgap. We repair commercial ice machines across Perth and get them making clean, clear ice again.
Sam Celesti has more than 20 years in commercial refrigeration and holds an ARCtick licence (AU55592), which matters because an ice machine is a refrigeration system with a water circuit bolted on. Plenty of faults that look like water problems are really refrigeration problems, and the reverse is just as common. We check both, so the fix holds.
Brands we work on include Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Manitowoc and Hoshizaki, along with most other makes found in Perth hospitality and retail. If you search for ice machine repairs near me and land here, tell us the model when you call and we will bring the parts most likely to be needed.
The types of ice machine we service
Ice makers are not all built the same way, and the type you run changes both the likely faults and the cleaning routine.
Cube ice machines. The workhorse of bars, cafes and hotels. Water flows over a chilled evaporator plate, freezes into cubes, then a harvest cycle warms the plate so the batch drops into the bin.
Flake ice machines (flakers). An auger scrapes thin ice off a refrigerated cylinder. Supermarkets, fishmongers and seafood restaurants use flake ice for display beds because it packs around product and chills fast.
Nugget ice machines. Similar auger design to a flaker, but the ice is compressed into soft, chewable pellets. Popular in healthcare settings and for blended or soft drinks.
Undercounter (self-contained) units. Ice maker and storage bin in one cabinet that slides under a bench. Compact, but they breathe hot air in a tight space, so dirty condensers are a frequent cause of trouble.
Modular heads on a bin. A separate ice making head sits on top of a storage bin, sometimes with a remote condenser. These produce far more ice per day and suit hotels, function venues and busy kitchens.
Ice and water dispensers. Countertop or wall units that dispense ice on demand. Hygienic for self-serve areas, but the chutes and dispensing paths need regular sanitising.
Common ice machine faults and what causes them
Here are the problems we are called out for most, with the usual causes behind each one. A symptom can have more than one cause, so we test rather than guess.
| Symptom | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| No ice at all | Water supply off or filter blocked, failed inlet valve or water pump, bin level sensor stuck on full, safety lockout after repeated failed harvests, or a refrigeration fault such as low gas or a failed compressor. |
| Slow production | Scale on the evaporator, dirty condenser coil, hot plant room, restricted water flow, or a failing fan motor. |
| Thin, hollow or cloudy cubes | Low water flow from scale or a weak pump, blocked distributor tubes, a poor water supply, or an incorrect harvest setting. |
| Ice stuck in harvest or frozen into a slab | Scale holding cubes to the plate, a faulty harvest valve, a failed thickness or harvest sensor, or a stuck water dump valve. |
| Leaking water | Blocked or poorly sloped drain, cracked water trough, split hoses, or a sump that overflows because the float or inlet valve sticks. |
| Machine full of slime or mould | Overdue sanitising, yeast or dust in the air around the machine, warm conditions, or an unsealed bin. |
| Noisy operation | Worn auger bearings or gearbox on flakers and nugget machines, a dry water pump, failing fan motor, or loose panels. |
| Error code or flashing light | The controller has stopped the machine to protect itself. The code points us at the fault, which we confirm with testing before any part is replaced. |
If an ice maker that sits next to a bar fridge or a display case is struggling, the same heat and airflow issues often affect both. We can look at those while on site as part of our commercial fridge and freezer repairs.
Why Perth water is tough on ice machines
Every ice machine concentrates the minerals in the water it uses. As water freezes on the evaporator, the pure water turns to ice first and dissolved calcium and magnesium are left behind in the trough. Over hundreds of cycles those minerals settle as hard white scale on the plate, the pump, the distributor and the sensors.

Perth scheme water comes from a mix of dams, groundwater and desalination, and its mineral content varies across the metro area. Where the water is harder, scale builds faster, so a cleaning interval that suits one suburb can be too long for another. Scale insulates the evaporator, so the machine runs longer for less ice. It also stops cubes releasing at harvest, chokes the water distributor and coats the probes that tell the controller when to harvest.
Left alone, scale turns a cleaning job into a parts job. Pumps seize, inlet valves stick open and evaporator coatings can be damaged by repeated stuck harvests. Regular descaling is the cheapest repair you will ever pay for.
Descaling and sanitising: ice is food
Ice that ends up in a glass or packed around fish is eaten, and food safety rules treat it as food. That makes the inside of an ice machine a food contact surface that has to be kept clean and sanitary, the same as a chopping board or a slicer. Mould in the bin or slime in the water trough is a hygiene risk for customers and a likely question from an environmental health officer.
A proper descale and sanitise is more than a wipe of the bin. Our process:
- Empty and discard all ice, then shut the machine down safely.
- Run the manufacturer approved scale remover through the water circuit, then remove and soak the distributor, curtains and other removable parts.
- Scrub the evaporator, trough, bin and chute to remove scale, biofilm and slime.
- Sanitise every food contact surface with a food safe sanitiser and rinse as the maker specifies.
- Clean the condenser coil, check the drain runs freely, and inspect the pump, valves and sensors.
- Restart, check the first harvest and confirm the ice comes out clear and fully formed.

Water filtration and a sensible cleaning schedule

A water filter is the single best upgrade for an ice machine in Perth. A good cartridge with scale inhibition slows mineral build up, traps sediment that would otherwise block valves, and removes chlorine taste so the ice does not flavour the drink. Filters only work while they are in date, so change the cartridge on the interval printed on the housing, or sooner if production drops or the pressure gauge falls.
As general guidance, most manufacturers recommend a full clean and sanitise at least every six months. Hard water, a hot plant room, or a high volume bar, seafood counter or brewery usually means every three or four months is the right interval. In between, staff should wipe the bin and door, keep the scoop clean, and keep the air vents clear.
Ice machine cleaning fits neatly into a site visit for your other equipment. If you already book scheduled commercial refrigeration maintenance, add your ice makers to the list so they are descaled and checked on the same day.
Repair or replace your ice machine?
Most ice machine faults are worth repairing. Water pumps, inlet valves, harvest valves, probes, fan motors and control boards are all replaceable parts, and a machine with a healthy refrigeration system can run for many more years after them.
Replacement deserves a serious look when:
- the compressor has failed on an older machine,
- the evaporator is leaking or its coating is badly damaged,
- parts for the model are no longer available, or
- the machine no longer keeps up with how much ice your venue now uses.
We will tell you plainly which way we would go, and you get a fixed quote before any work starts. If you are fitting out a new space, ask about sizing so the next machine suits your daily ice demand and your plant room.
Booking an ice machine service in Perth
Call or send a quote request with the brand, model and what the machine is doing. We call back within 30 minutes and offer same-day emergency callouts across Perth, 7 days a week. One company handles the job from start to finish, with no subcontractors.
Sam looks after restaurants, bars, hotels, supermarkets, medical facilities and industrial sites. Ice machines often share a back room with walk-in storage, so if your cool room is also running warm, we cover that too through our cool room repairs service.
