Fridge repairs for Scarborough's beachfront trade
Sam Celesti repairs commercial fridges and freezers for Scarborough's kiosks, cafés, takeaways, hotel bars and restaurants, about 11 km from the Perth CBD. The work covers glass-door drinks fridges, ice cream and chest freezers, display cabinets, underbench prep fridges and back-bar bottle fridges. Sam has more than 20 years in commercial refrigeration, holds ARCtick licence AU55592, and quotes a fixed price before he starts.
On the coast it is easy to blame salt for everything. For the cabinets inside a beachfront shop, though, the bigger enemies are sand, open doors and the summer surge in customers.
Sand, open doors and the self-contained fridge
Most kiosk and café fridges are self-contained: the compressor and condenser sit in the base of the cabinet and pull room air through a grille near the floor. In a beachfront shop, that floor is where the sand ends up. Every customer coming off the beach brings some in on their feet, and the fridge vacuums the finer grit straight into its condenser coil and fan.
Once the coil is packed with sand and dust, the fridge cannot get rid of heat. It runs longer, the compressor gets hot, and on a busy afternoon the drinks fridge stops keeping up. Grit also works into door gaskets and hinges, so doors stop closing fully, warm air gets in and the evaporator ices over.
Open shopfronts add to it. Kiosks that trade with doors or shutters wide open put their fridges in warm, humid sea air all day. Glass doors fog, display freezers frost up, and a fridge positioned in the sun near the counter works far harder than the same model in a shaded corner.
Sweep around the base of your fridges at the end of each day and keep the front grille clear. It is the cheapest maintenance a beachfront shop can do.

The cabinets Scarborough relies on
- Kiosks and takeaways near the beach: glass-door drinks fridges, glass-lid ice cream freezers and small chest freezers for ice blocks and chips.
- Cafés on The Esplanade: display cabinets for cakes and salads, underbench prep fridges and milk fridges under the coffee machine.
- Hotel and beachfront bars: rows of back-bar bottle fridges and drinks fridges that run flat out through summer evenings.
- Pizza shops and takeaways along Scarborough Beach Road: saladette prep fridges and upright freezers next to hot ovens.
Summer is the pressure point. Long warm evenings and weekend crowds mean more door openings, fuller cabinets and higher room temperatures, all at once. A fridge with a half-blocked condenser that coped in winter often gives up on the first hot Saturday.
Faults Sam fixes most on the coast
- Condenser coils and fans clogged with sand, dust and kitchen grease.
- Door gaskets and lid seals torn or full of grit.
- Evaporators iced up from doors left ajar during restocking.
- Thermostat and controller faults, including failed temperature probes.
- Overloaded shelves blocking the internal fan after a big drinks delivery.
Sam works on Skope fridges and other major brands, and on the Carel and Danfoss controllers and Tecumseh compressors inside them. Outdoor condensing units have their own salt-air story, which the page on cool room repairs in Scarborough explains.
If a fridge or freezer quits on a busy day
Pull the cabinet a little away from the wall if it is safe to do so, clear anything blocking the grille and move perishable stock such as dairy, cut fruit and ready meals into a working fridge. Under FSANZ guidance, potentially hazardous food should be kept at 5°C or colder. Food that has spent less than 2 hours above that can be chilled again, food at 2 to 4 hours should be used straight away, and food past 4 hours should be discarded. Then ring Sam, who will talk through the symptoms with you for free.
Sam provides commercial fridge repairs right across Perth, plus pre-summer refrigeration servicing for coastal venues. Bars with an ice maker that slows down in the heat can see ice machine repairs.
