Fridge and freezer repairs for the city's lunch trade
Sam Celesti repairs commercial fridges and freezers across the Perth CBD: open-front grab-and-go cabinets, underbench prep fridges, glass-door drinks fridges, back-bar bottle fridges and upright and chest freezers. He is the lead technician and the only one you deal with, holds ARCtick licence AU55592 and has worked in commercial refrigeration for more than 20 years. You get a fixed price before any panel comes off.
Most of the fridges Sam sees in the city are not in kitchens. They sit in tower lobbies, at food court counters and beside the till in convenience stores, which is exactly why they fail the way they do.
Where the CBD's fridges work hardest
- Lobby cafés along St Georges Terrace: open-front display cabinets stocked with sandwiches, salads and sushi for the office crowd, often next to automatic doors.
- Food court counters off the Hay Street and Murray Street malls: underbench fridges and saladettes packed under hot benches, plus upright freezers squeezed into small back areas.
- Convenience stores and express supermarkets: long runs of glass-door drinks fridges that stay open late and see constant door traffic.
- Yagan Square's food stalls: compact counters where a single prep fridge holds most of the day's ingredients.
- Laneway bars off Murray Street: back-bar bottle fridges built into tight joinery.
The pattern here is a short, intense trading window. Many city counters do most of their sales between 7am and 2pm, Monday to Friday. A grab-and-go fridge that drifts to 8°C at 11am costs you the whole lunch rush, because staff cannot legally sell from it and customers will not wait.

Why open-front display fridges struggle in tower lobbies
An open-front cabinet has no door. It keeps food cold with an air curtain: fans push chilled air down across the front and pull it back through a grille at the base. That curtain is surprisingly fragile, and a busy lobby attacks it from several directions.
- Drafts. Automatic entry doors and revolving doors push gusts straight across the cabinet face, spilling cold air onto the floor.
- Overloading. Product stacked past the load line, or packed against the rear return grille, breaks the airflow path. The top shelf warms first.
- Building air conditioning schedules. In many towers the lobby air conditioning runs on office hours. When it winds back at night or on weekends, the cabinet sits in warmer, more humid air and the evaporator ices up faster.
- Blocked condenser coils. Self-contained cabinets pull air through a coil near the floor. Lobby dust, carpet fibre and food court grease coat it, head pressure climbs and the compressor runs hot all day.
Sam checks the fan motors, defrost and controller settings, cleans the condenser and looks at how the cabinet is loaded and where it stands. Sometimes the fix is a part. Sometimes it is moving the unit a metre away from the doors.
Common faults in underbench, drinks and bar fridges
Away from the display cabinets, the faults are more familiar:
- Split or flattened door gaskets on underbench fridges that get kicked shut a hundred times a shift.
- Condenser fans seized by grease from the grill or sandwich press above.
- Thermostat and controller faults, including failed probes that read cold while the cabinet is warm.
- Evaporator icing in drinks fridges whose doors are left ajar during restocking.
- Chest and upright freezers frosting up because lids and doors no longer seal.
Sam works on Skope cabinets and other major commercial brands, plus the Carel and Danfoss controllers and Tecumseh compressors fitted inside many of them.
Before you call, and what to do next
Put a thermometer on the warmest shelf and note the reading and the time. Food Standards Australia New Zealand says potentially hazardous food belongs at 5°C or colder. If a cabinet has been above that for less than 2 hours, its stock can be chilled again; between 2 and 4 hours, use it straight away; at 4 hours or more, it goes in the bin. Then call Sam with the make and model, and he will talk through the symptoms on the phone for free.
For fridges anywhere in the metro area, see commercial fridge repairs across Perth. If the walk-in behind your counter is the problem, Sam also handles cool room repairs in the Perth CBD. Counters that cannot afford a lunchtime failure are good candidates for scheduled refrigeration maintenance, and for a breakdown outside business hours there is emergency refrigeration repair.
