Ice machine repairs in the city
Sam Celesti repairs commercial ice machines for hotels, bars, restaurants, conference venues and cafés in the Perth CBD. He is the lead technician, has more than 20 years in commercial refrigeration, holds ARCtick licence AU55592 and does each job himself. When you ring, you speak to the person who will open up the machine, and you have a fixed quote before any work begins.
Ice in the city is a volume business. A single hotel can run a dozen machines between its guest floors, bars and banquet kitchen, and a busy cocktail bar can empty a full storage bin before the second sitting. When one of those machines falls behind, the venue notices within hours.
Where the city uses its ice
The CBD has a different ice profile to the suburbs. These are the places where Sam's ice machine work concentrates:
- Hotels along St Georges Terrace, Hay Street and Adelaide Terrace: self-contained machines on guest floors, larger modular heads above storage bins in room service kitchens, and separate machines behind each bar.
- The Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and hotel function rooms: banquet service where hundreds of drinks and seafood platters need ice at once, so the machine has to have a full bin ready before the doors open.
- The State Buildings and the venues around Cathedral Square: restaurants and bars in a heritage setting, where machines often sit in tight back-bar joinery.
- Cocktail bars and rooftop bars: venues that care about cube quality, because a thin or cloudy cube dilutes a drink faster than a solid, clear one.
- Office tower cafés: iced coffee and cold drinks through summer, usually from a small undercounter machine that works far harder than it was sized for.

The city angle: demand that arrives all at once
The fault Sam hears about most in the CBD is not a machine that has died. It is a machine that cannot keep up. Ice machines are rated by how much they make in 24 hours, and the storage bin holds only a fraction of that. A machine that copes with a normal weekday falls behind when a conference lunch, a Friday rooftop crowd and a full hotel all land on the same afternoon.
That shortfall gets worse as the machine ages. Scale from the water supply coats the evaporator plate, so each freeze cycle takes longer and each harvest drops fewer cubes. A blocked water filter starves the machine of flow. An air-cooled condenser tucked into a cabinet with no ventilation runs hot, so production falls exactly when the weather and the crowds are at their peak. By the time staff say the machine is slow, it is often producing well under its rating.
Sam measures what the machine is actually doing, then works back to the cause. Often a full descale, a new filter cartridge and a clean condenser bring production back close to what the venue bought. Where the machine is simply too small for the trade, he will say so plainly rather than keep repairing it.
Ice that touches drinks and food is itself a food, so the machine needs regular cleaning and sanitising, not just a repair when it stops. Slime in the bin or around the water trough is a sign it is overdue.
While you wait for Sam
- Stop using ice that looks or smells wrong. If you see pink or black slime, or the ice tastes stale, empty the bin and use bagged ice until the machine has been cleaned.
- Check the water and power. Make sure the water tap behind the machine is fully open and the machine has not tripped its circuit. Building maintenance in towers sometimes shuts water off overnight and nobody turns it back on.
- Photograph the control panel. Any flashing light or code, plus the model and serial label, makes the free phone assessment far more useful.
Booking an ice machine repair in the CBD
Sam works on Manitowoc machines among other commercial ice makers, and handles scale, leaking bins, harvest faults, noisy condensers and machines that trip out. He is available 7 days, with breakdowns prioritised. For the full list of what he checks, see our ice machine repairs in Perth page. If the walk-in behind the bar is also playing up, there is a separate page for cool room repairs in the Perth CBD, and venues with several machines can book scheduled refrigeration maintenance so descaling happens before production drops.
