What is in the range

SKOPE lists 35 storage freezers from the same three ranges as its storage fridges: ActiveCore, ProSpec and ReFlex. Thirty-three of them are listed at -21 °C to -18 °C. The other two are a ProSpec roll-in whose figures are still marked TBC and a ReFlex fridge and freezer combination.

ActiveCore uprights

Four solid door uprights in one, two and three door widths, from 558 L to 1,399 L, all 2,210 mm tall.

ProSpec gastronorm freezers

ProSpec has 23 freezers. The GN 2/1 uprights hold 572 L and 1,266 L. The GN 1/1 underbench freezers run from about 830 mm wide and 126 L to 1,750 mm wide and 447 L, with solid doors or two, three, four, six or nine drawers, and there is a GN 2/1 underbench at 521 L. Several ProSpec underbench listings give three heights: 850 mm on standard castors, 860 mm to 900 mm on legs, or 720 mm plinth mounted. Two freezer stations, only 455 mm wide with one or two drawers and 105 L inside, keep frozen product right at a cooking station. Ten ProSpec listings are right hand versions, and a GN 2/1 roll-in is listed for trolley loading.

ReFlex freezers

ReFlex has eight. The uprights come in RF7 sizes of 469 L and 921 L and RF8 GN 2/1 sizes of 562 L and 1,242 L. Underbench options are 146 L in a 600 mm wide cabinet, 248 L and 387 L. The RF8.UPC.2.SD is a two door fridge and freezer combination, 1,400 mm wide with 1,034 L in total.

Running costs

A freezer uses several times the power of a fridge of the same size, so energy is worth comparing. The single door ActiveCore freezer, SKFT650NS-A, is listed at 10.47 kWh a day; the matching fridge cabinet, SKT650NS-A, at 2.16 kWh. Size for size, freezers also differ from one another: the 1,266 L ProSpec GN 2/1 upright is listed at 14.89 kWh a day, while the 1,399 L three door ActiveCore is listed at 24.98 kWh. Compare kilowatt hours per day as well as litres before you choose.

Before you order

  • Heat. A freezer in a hot storeroom or under a bench by the fryer runs longer and ices up faster. Perth summers push storerooms well past comfortable, so check the ventilation where it will live.
  • Power. Freezers draw more than fridges, and a large upright can trip a circuit already shared with other equipment. Check the plug and current draw on the full spec page against your outlets.
  • Space and the way in. A three door ActiveCore is 1,705 mm wide and 2,210 mm tall. Measure doorways and corners along the route as well as the final spot.
  • Food safety. FSANZ expects frozen food to stay frozen hard. A freezer holding -18 °C or colder covers that with room to spare when the door is opened during deliveries.

Supply, installation and service

Sam quotes the freezer with delivery and installation anywhere in Perth. He puts it in place, levels it so the doors seal, checks the power and airflow, and runs it down to temperature so you know it is ready before any stock goes in. If you are replacing an old freezer, ask Sam about removing it, since the refrigerant has to be recovered by a licensed technician. SKOPE freezers can also go by courier if you only need the unit delivered.

Ice build-up, failed door heaters and worn seals are the faults freezers see most. Sam services and repairs SKOPE freezers on a $75 + GST call-out plus $180 + GST an hour and parts, with a fixed repair price agreed before the work. See freezer and fridge repairs, maintenance visits or the rest of the SKOPE catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

How cold should a commercial storage freezer run?

Aim for -18 °C or colder. FSANZ expects frozen food to stay frozen hard, and a margin below -18 °C protects stock when the door is opened for deliveries. Thirty-three of the 35 SKOPE storage freezers are listed at -21 °C to -18 °C. Check the display regularly and probe stock if you suspect a problem.

How soon can I load a new freezer?

Wait until it has reached its set temperature, which Sam confirms before he leaves the site. Loading a warm cabinet with frozen stock slows the pull down and puts the product at risk. On a busy changeover, plan to have the new freezer running before the old one is emptied, and move stock across in batches.

Should I choose an upright or an underbench freezer?

Uprights hold far more, from 469 L to 1,399 L across the SKOPE range, and suit storerooms and bulk stock. Underbench and drawer freezers hold less but put frozen product where it is cooked, which saves walking during service. Many kitchens use one of each. Sam can help you work out the balance.

What is a ProSpec freezer station?

It is a narrow freezer, 455 mm wide, with one or two drawers and 105 L inside. It is designed to sit at a cooking station so frozen product such as chips or portioned items is within arm's reach. SKOPE lists it at -21 °C to -18 °C, the same as the larger ProSpec freezers.

Why does my freezer keep icing up?

Common causes are a worn door seal, a door left ajar, a failed defrost heater or a blocked drain. Warm, humid air getting in turns to ice on the evaporator, and the freezer then struggles to hold temperature. Sam can find the cause and give you a fixed price to fix it before he starts.

Do you service SKOPE freezers you did not supply?

Yes. Sam services and repairs SKOPE freezers wherever they were bought. The call-out is $75 + GST and labour is $180 + GST an hour plus parts. A routine service cleans the condenser, checks seals, fans and defrost, and confirms the cabinet is holding temperature.
